The Railway Club

Railway-related talks, trips, tours and lunches

The Railway Club provides a varied programme of events, concentrating primarily on steam railways and steam events, for those who have an interest in both vintage and modern railways and railway travel.

The highlight of the many activities organised by the club is the annual one week away break in the UK or the Continent.  Recent events have taken to us to Wales, Durham, Luxembourg, Germany.  These trips offer a wide range of attractions to visit, which are not limited to railways and appeal to all those who enjoy travel. The proposed away breaks for 2021 and 2022, subject to there being no Covid restrictions, are to the South of England and the Isle of Man respectively.

The Railway Club’s programme also includes day trips to vintage steam railways such as the Gloucester/Warwickshire Railway and the Watercress Line. Visits, too, are made to a variety of steam railway events within the UK such as Statfold Barns and the McAlpine VIP Steam Railway Day. Finally, there are visits to private and miniature railways, model railway exhibitions and day trips on mainline, steam-hauled trains to various locations and visits to railway museums.

Back at Phyllis Court, the members enjoy lunches, dinners and an annual dinner with illustrated presentations. These have included:

  • Rohan Vos talking about Rovos Rail, his own South African equivalent of the Orient Express
  • Tales of rail travel in India, Burma, Switzerland and Sri Lanka.
  • The story of the Trans-Siberian Railway
  • The Crossrail Project and the history of Reading station.

Most important of all is the chance to spend time with friendly and like-minded people while having great fun.
