The building of The Fitness Centre, the new health facility at Phyllis Court Club is now underway and a new planning application has been submitted to South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC).

The first phase of the development which is nearly complete is to move the four tennis courts back to their original location where the likes of top British player, Christine Trueman, used to play.

The new application is for a smaller facility than the original application which was approved in 2014 however it will include a 20 metre swimming pool, gym, exercise studio, treatment and changing rooms plus a sanarium (a combined sauna and steam room which emits dry heat).

The Club has been working closely with SODC on the outside design, so it is in keeping with the natural surroundings, environment and the river. The new design has more space around it, allowing for expansion if needed with a great viewing point for the river.  The Club hopes to finalise the inside design in the next few weeks.

When the building opens around Regatta next year, the exercise studio will offer a full range of classes and extend the programme of classes already offered at the Club (pilates, yoga, aerobics) to include dance exercise and ballet barre. Aqua aerobics will be planned in the swimming pool.  The gym will be fitted with the latest cardio equipment, ergos and weights.

Since 1938 members have been discussing having a pool at the club.  Last year the Club’s Council proposed a new business case which was voted for by over 60% of the members.

Patricia Christmas, Chair of the Council said, “This is the missing piece in the club’s jigsaw. Phyllis Court is a prestigious private members Club offering a range of social, leisure and recreational activities in a beautiful setting beside the river in the heart of Henley on Thames. Our Club is unique and with this new facility and competitive fees we will attract many people wishing to join us. We have attracted many more members over the last year and once we reach our target we will introduce a waiting list.’’
