What are the health benefits to Members from the Fitness Centre?

The Government recommends exercising at least 5 times per week for 30 minutes. Government reports show that ease of access is important to maintain regular exercise and the availability of The Fitness Centre at the Club will provide this to Members. (Dept of Health factsheet November 2011).

There is strong scientific evidence that being physically active can lead to a healthier and happier life and boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy as well as reducing the risk of stress, depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

It is well recognised that, regardless of age, regular exercise reduces the risk of major illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers by up to 50% and lowers the risk of early death by up to 30%.

Swimming and water-based exercises put less strain on joints as the body is supported by water; those with back pain, spine, hip and knee conditions benefit from water-based activities.

We believe it is more convenient and less expensive for those Members who currently travel to other clubs or gym facilities.

Who can use the facility?

The Fitness Centre is available for Members and hotel guests. Due to current number restrictions in the Fitness Centre, Members guests are not currently able to use the facilities and no under 18s are permitted in the centre. Hotel guests have temporary membership status when staying at the Club and are able to book to use the facilities.

The Fitness Centre is not for the general public.

Every Member of the Club has full access to all of the facilities within the Fitness Centre at no extra charge.

Does Phyllis Court provide instructors and personal trainers?

Yes, there are qualified fitness class instructors, personal trainers and therapists in the Fitness Centre.

Do I need to book to attend classes, use the gym or swim in the pool?

Yes, you need to pre-book classes, gym sessions and swim sessions online or by calling the Fitness Centre on 01491 570 518. Bookings can be made up to seven days in advance. Cancellation rules remain in place.

To ensure all Members have the opportunity to use the facilities you are not able to book back-to-back swim sessions or classes. Multiple sessions can be booked on the same day, but there must be at least a three-hour gap between sessions.

We are allowing Members to book 2 consecutive gym sessions in one day, however we do ask Members to leave the gym between sessions to allow staff to complete a mandatory clean between gym sessions.

Is there a one-way system in the Fitness Centre?

Yes, there are floor markings guiding Members towards each activity with a one-way flow around the Fitness Centre in place where possible.

Are the changing facilities and lockers available?

We encourage Members to arrive ready for their activity and to be prepared to shower at home to minimise use of the changing rooms. The changing rooms are only open to those using the swimming pool and the showers are currently closed. There are storage racks outside the studio and gym for Members to use to store minimal belongings such as a jacket or change of shoes. Belongings are left here at your own risk.

How are the facilities kept clean?

There is a 15 minute break in between all sessions to allow for thorough cleaning of the equipment and surfaces.

Is there hand sanitiser?
